Mill Run (South Branch Potomac River tributary) facts for kids
Mill Run is a cool stream, about 9.1 miles (14.6 kilometers) long, that flows into the South Branch Potomac River. It's part of a bigger water system that eventually reaches the Chesapeake Bay. You can find Mill Run in Hampshire County, which is in the eastern part of West Virginia.
This stream begins on Nathaniel Mountain and winds its way first to the northeast, then to the northwest. It joins the South Branch of the Potomac River south of Romney, close to Hampshire Park on South Branch River Road.
Where Mill Run Starts and Flows
Mill Run starts in a dip between two mountains: South Branch Mountain and Nathaniel Mountain. This area is part of the Nathaniel Mountain Wildlife Management Area, a special place where nature is protected.
As Mill Run flows, it meets several paths and old logging roads. These are often used by people who enjoy fishing and hunting in the wildlife area. Two smaller streams, also starting from dips in Nathaniel Mountain, join Mill Run as it moves towards the Peterkin Conference Center.
After passing Peterkin, Mill Run flows by Hampshire Park. This park has a 4-H camp, including a special meeting spot called a council circle. The stream then goes past the old Pancake Schoolhouse. Finally, Mill Run flows under South Branch River Road and empties into the South Branch of the Potomac River near Riverview Farm.

Mill Run used to be a place where fish were "stocked," meaning extra fish were added to the stream for people to catch. However, the stream is not stocked with fish anymore.
