Nathaniel Mountain is a mountain ridge in Hampshire County, West Virginia. It stretches from the southwest to the northeast. This mountain is part of West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle.

The highest point of Nathaniel Mountain is about 2,739 feet (835 meters) above sea level. On its western side, you'll find the South Branch Potomac River. To its east is South Branch Mountain, which is even taller at 3,028 feet (923 meters).

Most of Nathaniel Mountain is located inside the Nathaniel Mountain Wildlife Management Area (WMA). The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources owns and manages this special area.

Exploring Nathaniel Mountain

Nathaniel Mountain has a rugged landscape. It is mostly covered by thick, old forests. These forests are filled with oak and hickory trees. You can also find Virginia pine trees here.

Wildlife and Nature

The mountain is a great home for many different animals. It supports a special place for neo-tropical migratory birds. These birds travel long distances each year.

There are also two unique wetlands on Nathaniel Mountain. The Nature Conservancy has identified these important areas. It's unusual to find wetlands at such a high elevation.

These forested wetlands have many interesting plants. Some plants are not common in this region. You might see sphagnum moss (Sphagnum andersonianum). The cinnamon fern (Osmunda cinnamomea) also grows here.

Animals You Might See

Nathaniel Mountain is home to many animals. You might spot White-tailed deer roaming through the trees. Wild turkeys and squirrels are also common.

If you're lucky, you might even see an black bear. Grouse are another type of bird found here. People who enjoy hunting can find these animals on the mountain.

Fish in Mill Run

Mill Run is a stream on Nathaniel Mountain. It is a great place for fish. You can find native brook trout here. Rainbow trout also live in the clear waters of Mill Run.
