The Story of Milo's Hamburgers

How Milo's Began

Milo Carlton started his first restaurant on April 16, 1946. It was called Milo's Hamburger Shop. The first shop was in Birmingham, at 31st Street and 12th Avenue North. In 1963, the restaurant moved to a new spot on 10th Avenue North.

Growing the Business

Milo's started letting other people open their own Milo's restaurants in 1983. This is called selling franchises. The very first franchise opened on February 7, 1983. It was also in Birmingham.

Milo's Tea Company

Since the 1980s, Milo's has also sold its own brand of sweet tea. You can find this tea in many states. These include Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, and Texas. It is also sold in parts of Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The tea part of the business became its own separate company in 2002. It is now known as Milo's Tea Company.

Rebuilding After a Storm

In 2011, a very strong tornado hit Tuscaloosa. It destroyed one of the Milo's restaurants there. But a new Milo's was built in a different location in Tuscaloosa.
