Early Baseball Days

Milt Smith was born in Columbus, Georgia. He started playing professional baseball in 1948. His first teams were the Raleigh Tigers and the New Orleans Creoles. These teams were part of the Negro American Association and Negro Southern League.

In 1949, Smith played for the Charlotte Blues. Later that year, he joined a major league team in the Negro American League, the Philadelphia Stars. He played for the Stars until 1951. He also had a short time with the Kansas City Monarchs in 1950.

Joining Major League Baseball

In 1952, Milt Smith joined "organized baseball." This means he signed with a team that was part of the larger baseball system. He played for the San Diego Padres in the Pacific Coast League.

The Cincinnati Redlegs bought his contract in November 1954. They sent him back to San Diego to play more. In 1955, Smith was playing very well. He had a batting average of .338 and 65 runs batted in in 108 games.

Playing for the Cincinnati Redlegs

During his time with the Redlegs, he got 20 hits. These included three doubles, one triple, and three home runs. After 1955, he went back to the Pacific Coast League. He played in the minor leagues until he retired in 1961.
