A Look Back at Milton's History
Milton was first planned out in 1851. The town grew quite a bit in 1872 when the Burlington and Southwestern Railway built a train line through it. The first people who settled here came from a place called Milton, Delaware.

Based on the census from 2020, there were 380 people living in Milton. These people lived in 159 households, with 112 of them being families. The town had about 141 people per square mile (54.5 per square kilometer).
Most of the people in Milton were White (96.6%). A small number were Black or African American (0.8%), Asian (0.5%), or from two or more races (2.1%). About 1.6% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
The average age of people in Milton was 38 years old. About 27% of the residents were under 20 years old. Also, 16.8% of the people were 65 years old or older. The town had slightly more males (51.6%) than females (48.4%).
Schools in Milton
The schools in Milton are part of the Van Buren County Community School District.
Before 2019, Milton was served by the Fox Valley Community School District. This district used to have two schools: an elementary school in Cantril and a junior/senior high school in Milton. Later, the high school in Milton closed, and students went to Van Buren Junior/Senior High School in Keosauqua. The elementary school and district office then moved to Milton.
The Fox Valley school district joined with the Van Buren Community School District on July 1, 2004. This combined district then merged again into the Van Buren County Community School District on July 1, 2019.
