Milton is a city in Kentucky, located right by the Ohio River. It's in Trimble County. In 2020, about 590 people lived there, making it the biggest city in Trimble County.

The Milton-Madison Bridge connects Milton to Madison, Indiana. This bridge is super important because it's the only road connecting Kentucky and Indiana for about 40 miles (64 km)! Milton was even featured in a 1958 movie called Some Came Running, which starred famous actors like Frank Sinatra and Shirley MacLaine.

Milton's Early Days: A Look at Its History

Milton was first settled in 1785 and officially founded in 1789. Back then, it was still part of Virginia. A ferry service started in 1804, connecting Milton to Madison, Indiana, across the Ohio River. Later, a bridge was built in 1929 to make travel easier.

One of Milton's first newspapers, the Milton Free Press, began in 1879. It was started by Lewis P. Sarlls.

Surviving Floods and Storms

Milton has faced many floods over the years. The downtown area, especially near the river, has been damaged repeatedly. Because of this, not many old buildings are left. However, a few historic places like Ginn's Furniture Store, Rowlett's Grocery, and County General Store are still standing on Main Street.

The area just south of Milton was hit by a strong tornado on March 2, 2012. The Milton Fire and Rescue fire station was destroyed. More recently, on March 14, 2024, another tornado caused significant damage to downtown Milton. This storm also led to a county-wide power outage that lasted for over a day.
