Growth with the Railroad
The community grew when Henry Flagler's East Coast Railroad started building tracks in 1885. By 1893, with the railroad in place, Mims and its neighbor, Titusville, could easily ship citrus fruits and lumber to cities up north. By the end of the 1800s, citrus farms became a very important part of the local economy.
Mims as a Town
Mims officially became a city in the early 1900s. It continued to grow slowly until the start of the Great Depression. During the first years of the Great Depression, many people left Mims to find work elsewhere. Because so many people left, Mims could no longer afford to run its own city government. So, it became an unincorporated township within Brevard County, Florida, once again.
