A Look Back: The History of Mineral Ridge

Long ago, the area of Mineral Ridge was mostly a farming community. Some people also mined for coal there in the 1830s.

The Iron Ore Boom

In the mid-1850s, something exciting happened! A man named John Lewis, who was in charge of the Mineral Ridge Coal Mines, found a special type of iron ore. This ore was located right under the layers of coal. This discovery led to a big boom. Many companies started working with this iron ore. They used it in blast furnaces in nearby places like Brier Hill and Niles. Later, Mineral Ridge even got its own blast furnaces.

This iron became very important for Youngstown's growing steel industry. It was known by special names like "American Scotch Pig" and "Warner’s Scotch Pig."

Mining Decline

By the late 1800s, the mining industry in Mineral Ridge started to slow down. The community officially stopped being a municipal corporation in 1917. However, some mines continued to operate even into the time of the Great Depression.
