The main office for the Department of Defence is in Newbridge, County Kildare.

The Department of Defence is in charge of the Irish Defence Forces. These forces include the Army, Naval Service, and Air Corps. They protect Ireland and help with peacekeeping missions around the world.

In the past, the Minister for Defence was also called the Commander-in-Chief. This changed in 1954. Now, the President of Ireland is seen as the Supreme Commander of the Defence Forces. This is mostly a special title. In real life, the Minister for Defence acts for the President. The Minister also reports to the Irish Government.

The Minister for Defence gets advice from the Council of Defence. This group helps with all the important work of the Department of Defence. The Minister also has an assistant, called the Minister of State at the Department of Defence. Currently, this is Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, who is also a TD.
