Michiko Evwana (born December 8, 1974), known by her stage name Minmi (ミンミ), is a Japanese musician. She creates hip-hop and reggae songs. Minmi is also a singer, songwriter, and record producer. She was the first soca artist from Japan. From 2007, she was married to Wakadanna, a member of the Japanese reggae group Shōnan no Kaze, until their divorce on June 28, 2016.

Minmi started playing reggae music in Japanese clubs in 1996. Her first single, "The Perfect Vision," came out in 2002. This song became very popular, selling over 500,000 copies.

Minmi's Early Life and Music Career

Michiko Evwana was born in Osaka Prefecture, Japan, on December 8, 1974. She began playing the piano when she was five years old. This is when she started to love soul and jazz music.

Minmi began her music career in 1996. She performed at music events in clubs in Osaka. During this time, she also started making her own original songs. Minmi signed her first record deal with JVC Records. She released her first reggae song, "The Perfect Vision", in August 2002.

"The Perfect Vision" and Anime Music

Minmi's first single, "The Perfect Vision," became very popular. Many radio stations played it often. The song eventually sold more than 500,000 copies.

In 2004, Minmi helped write and sing two theme songs for the popular anime series Samurai Champloo. One of these was the main ending theme, "Shiki no Uta."

Exploring Soca Music

In 2005, Minmi released her first song with a soca sound. This song was called "Summertime!!" It was different from her usual reggae and hip-hop style. Because of this, she went to the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival in February 2006. She even performed on stage there.

In September 2006, she was nominated for best new artist. This was at the Reggae/Soca Music Awards in New York. Minmi went to the festival again in 2007. She performed the song "Sha Na Na (Japanese Wine)" with Machel Montano.

Minmi's Family Life

In June 2007, it was announced that Minmi had married Wakadanna. He was a member of the reggae group Shōnan no Kaze. She was also four months pregnant at the time. Minmi and Wakadanna first met in 2001 in Jamaica. They started dating soon after. In November 2007, she gave birth to her first child, a son.

In March 2010, Minmi announced she was expecting her second child. Her fourth album, Mother, was released in July 2010. She was about eight months pregnant then, and her baby bump was shown in the album photos. Her second child, another boy, was born on August 4, 2010, in New York.

On June 10 and July 22, 2015, Minmi released her seventeenth single, "Hologram."
