The History of Minor
Minor got its name in 1922 when a new high school was built. The school was named after John W. Minor, who had been a school superintendent for Jefferson County. The Young family generously donated the land for this new school.
The school was built in a central spot, making it easy for students from many nearby coal mining communities to attend. Some of these communities included Bayview, Brookside, and Mulga.
Sadly, the first school building burned down in 1926. But it was quickly rebuilt and opened again in 1928. W. C. Petty was the principal of Minor High School for a long time, from 1922 until 1958. The building served as the high school until May 1988, when a new high school was built in Adamsville. In the 1960s, another school, Minor Christian School, was started nearby.
