Miranda Tapsell, born on December 11, 1987, is a talented Larrakia Aboriginal Australian actress. She is well-known for her work in movies and TV shows. Many people recognize her from the film The Sapphires, where she played Cynthia. She also starred as Martha Tennant in the TV series Love Child. In 2016, she appeared in the series Wolf Creek as Fatima.

Early Life and Education
Miranda Tapsell was born in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. This was on December 11, 1987. Her parents are Tony and Barbara Tapsell. When she was five, her family moved to Jabiru. This town is near Kakadu National Park.
When Miranda was 16, in 2004, she won a special scholarship. It was from the Bell Shakespeare Company for regional performances. After finishing school, she moved to Sydney. There, she studied acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). She graduated from NIDA in 2008.
Miranda's Acting Career
Miranda Tapsell started acting on stage when she was young. Her first public performance was in September 1999. She sang with her school choir at the Jabiru Wind Festival.
Early Stage and Screen Roles
In 2008, Miranda performed in a play called Yibiyung. This was at the Belvoir Theatre. She played the main character. In 2010, she acted in A Midsummer Night's Dream in Darwin. Later that year, she was in Mother's Tongue in Perth. This play was about a young woman's connection to her Indigenous background.
In 2012, Miranda played Bonita in the mini-series Mabo. Then came her big role as Cynthia McRae. This was in the movie The Sapphires. The film tells the story of four Indigenous singers during the Vietnam War. She also appeared in an episode of the TV show Redfern Now.
Key Roles and Recognition
In 2013, Miranda performed in The Secret River. She played two characters in this play. Her performance earned her a nomination for a Helpmann Award. This award is for best supporting actress in a play.
In 2014, Miranda acted in a short film called Vote Yes. She played Elizabeth, a young Indigenous woman. The film looked at issues around the 1967 referendum. This referendum was about including Aboriginal peoples in the census. She also appeared in four episodes of the TV comedy show Black Comedy.
Miranda also played "Tiny Tim" Cratchit in A Christmas Carol at the Belvoir Theatre. At the same time, she was rehearsing for another play. This was Radiance, where she played a woman named Nona.
Success with Love Child
Also in 2014, Miranda joined the TV show Love Child. This drama was set in the 1960s. She played Martha Tennant, an unmarried pregnant Indigenous woman. Her character lived in a special ward with other women in Sydney.
Her acting in Love Child was highly praised. In May 2015, she won two Logie Awards. These were for Best New Talent and Most Outstanding Newcomer. When she accepted her first award, she spoke about diversity. She asked for "more beautiful people of colour on TV." She wanted to connect viewers and unite people.
In 2016, she played Juliet in a play called The Literati.
Recent Projects
From 2017 to 2019, Miranda starred in the play Black is the New White. She played Charlotte Gibson, a lawyer. Her character brings her non-Indigenous fiancé home for Christmas.
In 2018, Miranda wrote a piece for a book. It was called Growing Up Aboriginal In Australia. Her contribution was titled "Nobody Puts Baby Spice in a Corner."
In April 2020, Miranda's own book was published. It is a memoir called Top End Girl.
In 2021, Miranda co-hosted a live TV special. It was called Australia's Biggest Singalong! with Julia Zemiro.
In 2024, it was announced that Miranda would play Lauren Ford again. This is for a new TV series called Top End Bub. It is a spin-off from her movie Top End Wedding.
Personal Life
Miranda Tapsell is a Larrakia woman. She lives in Melbourne with her husband, James Colley. They have a daughter, who was born in December 2021.
