Miroslav "Miro" Žbirka (born October 21, 1952 – died November 10, 2021) was a very popular Slovak pop and rock singer and songwriter. He was famous across Czechoslovakia in the 1980s. Miro was born in Bratislava. His father was Slovak, and his mother was English. He sang songs in Slovak, English, and Czech.

Miro Žbirka sometimes recorded his music in London. He lived in Slovakia for many years. In the early 1990s, he moved to Prague, Czech Republic, where he later passed away.

Miro Žbirka's Musical Journey

In the late 1970s, Miro Žbirka helped start two popular music bands in Czechoslovakia. These bands were called Modus and Limit. He quickly became known for his talent.

In 1982, Miro became super famous. He won the yearly Zlatý slavík award. This award was for the best male singer in all of Czechoslovakia. It was a huge achievement!

After Czechoslovakia split into two countries in 1992, Miro kept winning awards. He won the top spot in the Slovak annual Slávik Awards. He was named the number one male singer in 2002, 2004, and 2005.

Later Years and Legacy

Miro Žbirka even performed with the famous musician Jon Anderson in 2012. Jon Anderson is known for being the lead singer of the band Yes.

There's even an asteroid named after him! Asteroid 5895 Žbirka was found by a Czech astronomer named Zdeňka Vávrová in 1982. It was named in his honor in 2019.

Miro Žbirka died in Prague on November 10, 2021, because of pneumonia. Before he passed away, he had recorded the vocals for his 15th studio album. This album was called Posledné veci, which means Last Things. His son, David Žbirka, finished the album in May 2022.

Major Achievements

Miro Žbirka won many important awards throughout his career.

He won the prestigious Zlatý slavík (Golden Nightingale) award in 1982 for Best Male Singer in Czechoslovakia. He was often in the top few spots in this poll for many years.

After Czechoslovakia split, he continued his success in Slovakia. He won the Slávik Awards for Best Male Singer in 2002, 2004, and 2005. He was also frequently among the top singers in this poll.

Miro also received several Aurel Awards, which are important music awards in Slovakia. In 2002, his song "Čo bolí, to prebolí" won Song of the Year. He was also inducted into the Aurel Awards Hall of Fame in 2006, which is a very special honor.

Additionally, he won multiple OTO Awards in Slovakia for Best Male Singer. He won this award in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2012, and 2013. This shows how much people loved his music and performances.
