The Mischianza (pronounced "miss-kee-AHN-zah") was a huge, fancy party held in Philadelphia on May 18, 1778. Its name comes from an Italian word meaning "medley" or "mixture." This special event was thrown to honor British General Sir William Howe before he returned to England.

General Howe was the main leader of the British forces in America during the early years of the American Revolution. He had decided to leave his job and go back home. His officers wanted to give him a grand farewell. They spent a lot of money, about 3,312 guineas, which would be like hundreds of thousands of dollars today!

The party was planned by Captain John André and John Montresor. It included many exciting activities. There was a boat race along the Delaware River with three music bands playing. British warships fired a 17-gun salute. Guests also enjoyed a parade, a tournament with "knights" jousting, a big dance, and a fancy dinner. The night ended with a dazzling fireworks show. All this took place at Walnut Grove, a country estate belonging to Joseph Wharton.

What Was the Mischianza?

The Mischianza was more than just a party; it was a grand celebration. It was a way for the British officers to show their respect and appreciation for General Howe. This event was one of the most elaborate social gatherings during the American Revolution. It showed off the wealth and power of the British military at that time.

Planning the Big Party

Captain John André and John Montresor were in charge of organizing the Mischianza. They thought of every detail to make it a memorable event. The party was designed to be a mix of different entertainments, just like its name "mixture" suggests. They wanted to create a truly spectacular farewell for General Howe.

Who Attended?

More than 400 important guests came to the Mischianza. These included many high-ranking British officers and loyalists (people who supported the British during the war). Some of the notable guests were:

  • Admiral of the Fleet Richard Lord Howe, who was General Howe's brother.
  • General Henry Clinton, who would take over General Howe's command in New York.
  • Peggy Shippen, who later married Benedict Arnold, a famous American general who switched sides to the British.
  • Peggy Chew, the daughter of a well-known judge.
  • Rebecca Franks, whose father was a loyalist named David Franks.
  • Wilhelm von Knyphausen, a general leading the Hessians, who were German soldiers hired by the British.

The Man Behind the Fun: John André

Captain John André was a very talented officer. He was known as the "social director" for the army during the winter months. André was a poet, an actor, and a skilled violinist. He even painted the background scenes for plays that the English Army members performed. His artistic skills helped make the Mischianza such a beautiful and exciting event.
