Rebecca Franks: A Loyalist's Story

Early Life and Family

Rebecca Franks was born around 1760 in Philadelphia. Her father, David Franks, was a successful businessman. She was the youngest child in her family. Her sister, Abigail, married Andrew Hamilton. Her aunt, Phila Franks, married Oliver De Lancey, who was a major general during the American Revolutionary War.

Rebecca's grandmother, Abigail Franks, was also well-known. She wrote many letters about life in New York in the 1700s. These letters shared details about society, politics, and religion of that time.

During the American Revolution

When the American Revolution began, Rebecca, like her father, chose to support Great Britain. People who supported Britain were called Loyalists. In 1778, the British army took control of Philadelphia. During this time, Rebecca took part in a special party called the "Mischianza."

The "Mischianza" was a very fancy and detailed celebration. It was held to honor British General Sir William Howe before he left America. Major John André helped organize this big event. Rebecca was one of the young women who participated in the festivities.

Rebecca was known for her quick wit and writing skills. She wrote letters to important men of her time. Some people believe she wrote a Loyalist poem called "The Times, a Poem by Camilio Querno, Poet Laureate of the Congress." General Charles Lee of the Continental Army even wrote a letter to her that became famous and was published in magazines.

Life in England

In 1782, Rebecca married Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Johnson in New York. Henry Johnson was a soldier in the 17th Regiment of Foot. After they married, they moved to Bath, England.

Henry Johnson later became a general. He was honored with a special title, a baronetcy, because of his brave actions during a rebellion in Ireland. This meant Rebecca became Lady Johnson.

Rebecca and Henry had two sons. Sadly, one of their sons was killed in the famous Battle of Waterloo. Rebecca lived in Bath, England, for the rest of her life. She passed away in September 1823.
