Mykel Antoinea Gray (born March 28, 1985), known as Miss Mykie, is an American actress, TV host, and singer. She is famous for being one of the hosts of BET's popular show 106 & Park. Miss Mykie hosted the show from October 2012 to May 2013. She also created and hosted "The Tea," which was the first show ever on Instagram.
Early Life and Education
Mykel Antoinea Gray was born in Denver, Colorado. She grew up in a big family with seven siblings. They often put on fun talent shows and game shows in their basement. When she was three, her family moved to Houston, Texas.
At 13, Mykel became very interested in music. She wanted to be a singer and songwriter. In high school, she even started an all-girl music group. Her dad and brother built a music studio at home. Mykel spent many hours there, practicing her music. Her older brother became her manager and producer. He helped her make a studio album, but it was never released. She performed at local shows often. She even opened for famous artists like Tyrese Gibson and Sean Paul.
After high school, Mykel went to Howard University in Washington, D.C. She joined the Ooh La La Dance Line for the Howard Showtime Marching Band. She also became part of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. Mykel graduated from Howard University in May 2007. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in acting.
Career Highlights
After college, Mykel taught theater arts at a middle school. She worked at Gregory-Lincoln Education Center in Houston, Texas. She taught there from August 2007 to June 2012. Mykel then decided to leave teaching. She wanted to focus on her dreams of being a TV host, actress, and musician.
In 2012, Mykel recorded her first studio album. She became very popular online, getting over one million views on YouTube. On October 1, 2012, Mykel officially became a host for BET's 106 & Park. She hosted the show with Paigion, Shorty da Prince, and Bow Wow. She left the show in May 2013.
On July 15, 2013, Miss Mykie launched "The Tea." This was the first-ever show to be hosted on Instagram. She is also the host of "The Drop," a show produced by Russell Simmons. On December 19, 2014, Miss Mykie returned to BET. She hosted the final episode of 106 & Park, called "The Final Act." She hosted alongside other past hosts like Free Marie and Rocsi Diaz.
