About the Mission Church

The Mission Church is built from logs, which are tree trunks. It sits on the eastern fork of the Chandalar River. This church is important because it was one of many mission churches. These churches were built by the Episcopal Church in Alaska in the early 1900s. They helped spread Christianity in the region.

The building is also special because of its connection to Reverend Albert E. Tritt. He was a very important person in the community.

Who Was Reverend Albert E. Tritt?

Reverend Albert E. Tritt was born in Arctic Village. He learned about Christianity from Episcopal missionaries. This happened in Fort Yukon, which is about 100 miles south.

He came back to his village with a Bible. This Bible was written in the Takudh language. He wanted to share his new faith with others. In 1925, he became a deacon in the Episcopal Church. A deacon is a type of church leader. Reverend Tritt also helped build a newer church in the village in 1939.

A Historic Landmark

The Mission Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. This means it is recognized as an important historic site in the United States. It helps preserve the history and culture of Arctic Village.
