The Missouri History Museum is a fun and educational place located in Forest Park, St. Louis, Missouri. It tells the story of Missouri's past. The museum is run by the Missouri Historical Society, which started way back in 1866. Good news: you can visit the museum for free! This is possible because it gets support from the Metropolitan Zoological Park and Museum District.

Exploring the Museum's Buildings

The Missouri History Museum is housed in a special building called the Jefferson Memorial Building. It was built in 1913 using money earned from the big Louisiana Purchase Exposition, also known as the 1904 World's Fair.

The Emerson Center Addition

In 2000, a large new part of the museum was finished. It's called the Emerson Center. This addition made the museum much bigger, allowing for more exhibits and visitors. The Emerson Center has a cool glass front that goes from the ground all the way to the roof.

This new section was designed by Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum. It added lots of new exhibit space. It also includes an auditorium for events, classrooms for learning, a restaurant, and a gift shop. The Emerson Center is known for being a "green museum" because it was designed to protect the environment.

The museum has an amazing collection of items that tell stories about Missouri and St. Louis. You can see old items from the area's early days, including things from Native Americans and colonial settlers. There are also many artifacts from the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, the famous 1904 World's Fair.

Famous Figures and Expeditions

A special part of the collection focuses on Charles Lindbergh. He was the first person to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean in his plane, the Spirit of St. Louis. You can even see a replica of his famous plane right inside the museum!

The museum also has many items from the Lewis and Clark Expedition. This famous journey happened from 1804 to 1806. St. Louis was the starting point for their adventure, so the museum has many important artifacts from their travels.

Popular Exhibits to See

The museum often has special exhibits that change over time. Some past exhibits have included:

  • Items from the 1904 World's Fair, showing what life was like during that big event.
  • Exhibits about Charles Lindbergh and his amazing flight.
  • Displays celebrating the Americans with Disabilities Act, which helps people with disabilities.
  • A major exhibit about the Lewis and Clark National Bicentennial, marking 200 years since their expedition.
