Missouri Key is a small island located in the beautiful Florida Keys. It's part of a long chain of islands that stretch off the southern coast of Florida. This tiny island is known for being crossed by a famous road called the Overseas Highway.
Where is Missouri Key?
Missouri Key is found in the lower part of the Florida Keys. It sits between two other small islands: Ohio Key and Little Duck Key. The main road that connects all these islands, U.S. 1, also known as the Overseas Highway, goes right over Missouri Key. You can find it around mile marker 39.5 on this highway. A mile marker is like a small sign that tells you how far you've traveled on a road.
How Missouri Key Got its Name
This island got its name a long time ago, when a special railroad was being built. This railroad was called the Overseas Railroad, and it was the idea of a man named Henry Flagler. Workers from the state of Missouri were helping to build this amazing railroad. They named the island "Missouri Key" to remember their home state.
Other Names for the Island
Sometimes, local people call Missouri Key by other names. You might hear it called Little Grassy Key or Grassy Island. These names probably come from the plants and grasses that grow on the island.
