History of the Outlander
The Mitsubishi Outlander first appeared in Japan in 2001. Back then, it was called the Mitsubishi Airtrek. The name "Airtrek" was chosen to show that the car could take people on exciting trips. It combined the words Air and Trek to suggest a feeling of freedom and adventure.
Later, the name was changed to "Outlander." This new name also suggested a sense of adventure. It made people think about traveling to new and exciting places.
Different Generations
Over the years, the Outlander has been updated several times. Each update is called a new "generation."
Second Generation (2006)
The second version of the Outlander came out in 2006. From this point on, all countries, including Japan, started using the "Outlander" name. This version was built on a special car base called the GS platform.
Some other car companies, like Peugeot and Citroën, even made their own versions of this Outlander. They were called the Peugeot 4007 and Citroën C-Crosser. These cars were almost the same as the Outlander, just with different badges. This is called "badge engineering."
By October 2016, Mitsubishi had sold 1.5 million Outlanders around the world. This was a big achievement for the car!
Third Generation (2013)
In 2013, Mitsubishi launched a special version of the Outlander. It was a plug-in hybrid model, called the Outlander PHEV. A plug-in hybrid car can run on both gasoline and electricity. You can even plug it in to charge its battery.
This PHEV model became very popular. By 2022, about 300,000 units had been sold worldwide. It's known as the world's best-selling plug-in hybrid car since 2018. Europe has been the biggest market for the Outlander PHEV. It was Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years in a row, from 2015 to 2019.
Fourth Generation (2021)
The newest version of the Outlander came out in 2021. This car is special because Mitsubishi joined forces with Renault and Nissan. This group is called the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance.
Because of this alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander shares its base with the Nissan Rogue and X-Trail. This means they use a similar design for their main parts, like the car's frame.
Sales Milestones
The Mitsubishi Outlander has been very successful around the world. By October 2016, 15 years after it first came out, over 1.5 million Outlander vehicles had been sold globally. This shows how popular and reliable the car has been for many families and drivers.
