Miya Ando's Art and Ideas

An abstract painting by Miya Ando, called "Yūgen blue gold view 2".

Miya Ando creates paintings, drawings, and sculptures. She often uses images from nature in her art. These can be things like clouds, the changing seasons, ocean tides, rain, or moonlight. She uses these to show important ideas about life.

Ando once said that "nature is the great equaliser." This means everyone understands things like rain or feeling a huge open space. She likes to make art that shows how we connect with our physical world.

She is well-known for using steel or shiny aluminum sheets. She treats these metals with chemicals to create unique paintings. These paintings often show imaginary horizons.

Miya Ando loves how metal can reflect light. She says metal looks strong and lasting. But at the same time, it can seem delicate, bright, soft, or even dream-like. She uses metal to show how things can be both strong and gentle. It also helps her express how everything changes and doesn't last forever.

Her art has been shown in many museums. These include The Asia Society Texas and The Noguchi Museum. Her work is also part of important collections. For example, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) owns some of her pieces. In 2014, she was invited to give a talk at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Art for Public Spaces

Miya Ando has created many art pieces for public places. In 2009, she made a piece called 8-Fold Path. It has four large steel squares. People said this artwork felt "meditative" and "spiritual."

Also in 2009, she created Fiat Lux (which means 'Let There Be Light'). This art piece has 144 small steel squares. It is in a meditation room in Brooklyn, New York.

Ando also made a special art piece for a chapel in Kentucky. This piece is 40 feet long and made of steel. It collects sunlight during the day. Then, it glows blue at night. This artwork is called Shelter[Meditation 1-12].

She has also made art for hospitals and other public groups. She was part of the US State Department's Art in Embassies Program. This program places American art in U.S. embassies around the world. She also created a memorial for the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami in New York City.

In 2019, Miya Ando made a large fabric banner called Ginga (Silver River). It flowed through the Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, New York.

Honoring 9/11 Victims

One of Miya Ando's most famous public artworks is Since 9/11. This sculpture is 8 meters (about 26 feet) tall. It is made from steel that came from the World Trade Center buildings.

The sculpture was made to honor the people who died in the 2001 attack on the World Trade Center Twin Towers in New York City. It is a permanent memorial. You can find it in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, England.
