About Mobilong

What's in a Name?

The name Mobilong has a special history. It was actually the first name for the early settlement that later became Murray Bridge. However, the current area called Mobilong was specifically named after the Mobilong Swamp in the year 2000.

A historian from South Australia, Geoffrey Manning, explains the name. He says Mobilong comes from an Aboriginal term, mupulawangk. This word means "soft reed place." Reeds growing along the Murray River banks were used by Aboriginal people to make coiled baskets. The name was first used officially in 1860 for a land division called the Hundred of Mobilong.

Where is the Prison?

You might hear about the Mobilong Prison. It's interesting to note that this prison is not actually located in the Mobilong suburb itself. Instead, it's found in the northwestern part of the Murray Bridge area, next to Rocky Gully.
