Modun, also known as Maodun or Modu (born around 234 BCE, died around 174 BCE), was a very important leader. He was the son of Touman and is known for starting the powerful Xiongnu Empire. He became the leader in 209 BCE.

Modun ruled for many years, from 209 BCE to 174 BCE. Before becoming the main leader, he was a military commander under his father, Touman. Later, he became the Chanyu (which means "Son of Heaven" or "Great Leader") of the Xiongnu Empire. This empire was located in what is now Mongolia.

Building the Xiongnu Empire

Modun worked hard to make the Xiongnu Empire strong. He brought together many different tribes that lived in the Mongolian-Manchurian grassland. This was important because the Xiongnu had lost some of their lands. The Qin dynasty from China had taken over their grazing areas around 215 BCE. A Chinese general named Meng Tian led these Qin forces.

Modun's Rise to Power

Modun was a skilled military leader. He helped the Xiongnu become more organized and powerful. At the same time, the Qin dynasty in China started to have problems. Their first emperor died in 210 BCE, and the Qin empire soon fell apart. This gave Modun a great chance to expand his Xiongnu Empire.

Expanding the Empire

Modun's empire grew to be one of the largest of its time. Its eastern border reached the Liao River. To the west, the empire stretched all the way to the Pamir Mountains. In the north, it reached Lake Baikal. This huge empire showed how successful Modun was as a leader.

Legacy and Successor

Modun's leadership created a strong and lasting empire. He is remembered as a key figure in the history of the Xiongnu people. After Modun's death, his son, Laoshang, became the next leader of the Xiongnu Empire.
