Moel Sych: A Welsh Mountain
Moel Sych is a significant mountain for a few reasons. It's a popular spot for hikers who enjoy exploring the Welsh countryside. The mountain offers amazing views of the surrounding areas, including a lake called Llyn Lluncaws.
Where is Moel Sych Located?
This mountain is special because its summit sits at a point where three historic counties meet. These counties are Montgomeryshire, Denbighshire, and Merionethshire. This means Moel Sych is the highest point in Montgomeryshire. It's like a natural border marker between these old regions of Wales.
How Tall is Moel Sych?
For a long time, people thought Moel Sych was the highest peak in the Berwyn range. This would have made it the highest point for both Denbighshire and Montgomeryshire. However, later measurements by the Ordnance Survey (OS), which maps the UK, showed something different.
First, they found that Cadair Berwyn North Top was the same height as Moel Sych. Then, the OS discovered an even higher point between these two peaks. This new spot was about 5 meters (16 feet) taller, reaching 832 meters (2,730 feet). This higher point is now known as Cadair Berwyn. On lists of mountains, this new highest point is sometimes called Cadair Berwyn New Top. So, while Moel Sych is very tall, it's not the absolute highest in its range anymore.
What Can You Find at the Top?
At the very top of Moel Sych, you'll find a cairn. A cairn is a pile of stones built by people, often to mark a summit or a path. From the summit, you can look down into the southern valley, called a Cwm, and see the lovely Llyn Lluncaws lake. It's a great reward after a climb!
