The Moesa District, also called Moesano, used to be an important administrative area in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. It covered about 473.74 square kilometers (182.91 sq mi). This area included the Val Mesolcina, which is the valley of the Moesa River.

In 2015, about 8,125 people lived in the Moesa District. The main language spoken there was Italian. On January 1, 2017, the Moesa District was replaced by the Moesa Region as part of a big change in the canton's organization.

How Moesa Was Organized

The Moesa District was divided into three smaller parts called Kreise (circles). These circles then contained a total of fourteen municipalities. Municipalities are like small towns or local government areas.

Calanca Circle

The Calanca circle was one of the three main parts of the Moesa District. It included several municipalities. These were Buseno, Calanca, Castaneda, Rossa, and Santa Maria in Calanca.

Mesocco Circle

The Mesocco circle was another important section of the district. It contained three municipalities. These municipalities were Lostallo, Mesocco, and Soazza.

Roveredo Circle

The Roveredo circle was the third part of the Moesa District. This circle had the most municipalities. These included Cama, Grono, Leggia, Roveredo, San Vittore, and Verdabbio.

Languages Spoken in Moesa

The official language in the Moesa District was Italian. Many local people traditionally spoke a special kind of Italian called the Western Lombard dialect.
