Mohammed Nasim (born April 2, 1948 – died June 13, 2020) was an important politician from Bangladesh Awami League. He served as a minister in the government of Bangladesh. He was the Minister of Home Affairs from 1999 to 2001. Later, he became the Minister of Health and Family Welfare from 2014 to 2019.
Mohammed Nasim was elected to the Jatiyo Sangshad (the Parliament of Bangladesh) six times. He represented the Sirajganj-1 and Sirajganj-2 areas. He was also a top leader in the Awami League party.
Early Life and Education
Mohammed Nasim was born on April 2, 1948. His family lived in a place called Kuripara in Sirajganj District. His parents were Muhammad Mansur Ali and Amena Monsur.
His father, Muhammad Mansur Ali, was a very important person. He served as the third Prime Minister of Bangladesh in 1975. Sadly, his father passed away during a difficult time in the country's history.
Nasim went to Edward College in Pabna for his studies. He was a student leader there. At first, he was part of a student group called Chhatra Union.
In 1966, a famous leader named Sheikh Mujibur Rahman visited Pabna. He met Nasim and encouraged him to join Chhatra League. This was the student group of the Awami League. Nasim joined and later became a leader in the Edward College Students’ Union in 1967.
In 1969, Nasim moved to Dhaka and studied at Jagannath College. During the Bangladesh Liberation war, he helped the government that was working from outside Bangladesh. His father was also a minister in that government. Nasim earned a degree in political science from the college.
Political Journey
After Bangladesh became independent in 1971, Nasim became a leader in the Awami League in Pabna. He wanted to become a Member of Parliament in 1973 but did not get the chance that time.
He became a top leader in Bangladesh Jubo League, which is the youth part of the Awami League. When a new political system called BAKSAL was formed in 1975, he became its general secretary.
After a major event in 1975, Nasim went to India for a while. His father was arrested and later died while in prison. When Nasim returned to Bangladesh, he was also held for some time.
In 1982, Nasim became a top leader in the Awami League. He was first elected to the parliament in 1986. He represented the Sirajganj-1 area. He was elected again from the same area in 1996.
In June 1996, Nasim was appointed as the Minister for Public Works, Post, and Telecommunications. Later, in March 1999, he also became the Minister of Home Affairs. This meant he was in charge of keeping the country safe.
In 2006, he was injured during a political gathering.
During a period of political change in 2007, Nasim faced some legal challenges. Because of this, his son, Tanvir Shakil Joy, was chosen to run for parliament in the 2008 election instead. His son won the election.
Nasim was elected to parliament again in 2014 from Sirajganj-1. He was then appointed as the Minister of Health and Family Affairs. In this role, he worked to improve health services for people in Bangladesh.
Family and Passing
Mohammed Nasim was married to Laila Arjumand Banu. They had three sons, and one of them is Tanvir Shakil Joy, who also became a politician.
On June 1, 2020, Nasim was admitted to a hospital in Dhaka. He had tested positive for COVID-19. A few days later, he had a serious medical event. On June 13, 2020, he sadly passed away while still in the hospital.
