Mokarrameh Ghanbari (born in 1928 – died October 24, 2005) was an amazing Iranian artist. She taught herself how to paint and won many art awards from different countries. What's even more incredible is that she started painting when she was 61 years old, in 1991!
Early Life and Painting Journey
Mokarrameh was born in 1928 in a village called Darikhaneh. This village is in the northern part of Mazandaran Province in Iran. Even though she was very talented, she never went to art school. She learned to paint all by herself.
She started her painting journey when she was 61. Her son had left some artist's paintings at her house. Seeing them inspired her to pick up a brush!
Her Unique Art Style
Mokarrameh used bright and original colors in her paintings. She got her ideas from the beautiful nature around her home. Within just a few years, people in Iran and other countries noticed her amazing artwork.
She had her first art show at the Seyhun Gallery in Tehran in 1995. After that, she took part in ten more exhibitions. She even won a special jury prize at the Roshd Film Festival. She also received an award at a festival for rural art and literature.
In 2001, she was honored with a certificate in Stockholm, Sweden. She was also named the "exemplary woman" of the year. The Swedish National Museum also called her the "Female Painter of 2001."
Her Legacy and Museum
Mokarrameh Ghanbari passed away on October 24, 2005. She was 77 years old. She is buried in the yard of her own house in Iran.
Today, her house is a special art museum! It is decorated with her paintings. The Iran Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization officially registered it as a museum.
In 2002, an Iranian filmmaker named Ebrahim Mokhtari made a documentary about her. The film was called Mokarrameh, Her Memories and Dreams. It shared her life story and showed her beautiful artwork.
