Protecting Molega Lake's Wildlife
Molega Lake is a very special place for many animals and plants. It is home to several species that are considered endangered. This means they are at risk of disappearing forever. Some of these species live only around Molega Lake.
Eastern Ribbon Snake Habitat
One important animal found here is the Eastern ribbon snake. Molega Lake is the only place east of Quebec where a large group of these snakes lives. Protecting their home is very important for their survival.
Blanding's Turtle and Its Nests
The lake also provides a home for the endangered Blanding's turtle. These turtles build their nests around Molega Lake and nearby Kejimkujik National Park. The Canadian government protects these turtles under a law called the Species at Risk Act. This law helps keep them safe.
Knox Conservation Lands
A special area near the lake is called the Knox Conservation Lands. This land was given to the Nova Scotia Nature Trust. This group works to protect important natural places. The goal is to keep this part of the lake's ecosystem safe forever.
The Knox Conservation Lands are unique. They are the only known place in Canada where a plant called Lachnanthes (also known as Carolina redroot) grows. This area is also the first officially protected home for the Eastern ribbon snake.
