Molinari Delicatessen is a very old and famous deli in San Francisco, specifically in an area called North Beach. It first opened its doors way back in 1896. This makes it one of the oldest delis in the entire United States!
A delicatessen, or deli, is a special kind of shop that sells delicious ready-to-eat foods. These often include sandwiches, cheeses, and cured meats like salami. Molinari's is especially known for making its own brand of salami. It's called P.G. Molinari and Sons, Inc. This salami is so good, it's sold all over the country and even won a gold medal award in Italy!
The Story of Molinari's
Molinari's was started by a man named P.G. Molinari. He moved to San Francisco in 1884 from the Piedmont region of Italy. In 1895, after getting married, Molinari decided to open his own business on Broadway.
Moving After the Earthquake
However, a huge event changed things for many businesses in San Francisco. This was the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. After the earthquake, P.G. Molinari moved his deli to a new spot at 373 Columbus Avenue. This is where it still stands today!
Family Business Through Generations
After World War I, P.G. Molinari's sons, Frank and Angelo, joined the business. They became partners with their father. This helped Molinari's grow and become even more successful.
P.G. Molinari retired in 1950. After he retired, Frank's son-in-law, Peter Giorgi, became part of the family business. Later, in 1978, P.G.'s great-grandson, Frank Giorgi, also joined after finishing college at the University of California, Berkeley. This shows how Molinari's has truly been a family business for many generations!
