What Makes Tiger Bread Special?
The most interesting part of tiger bread is its crust. It has a pattern that looks like a tiger's stripes or a giraffe's spots! This pattern is made by painting a special rice paste onto the bread before it's baked.
How the Crust Gets Its Look
When the bread bakes, the rice paste dries out. It then cracks and shrinks, creating the cool, mottled design. This paste also gives the bread a special flavor. The outside of the bread is crunchy, but the inside is soft and fluffy.
Tiger bread is usually made as a long, rounded loaf called a bloomer. It can also be made into smaller bread rolls. The special rice paste technique can be used on almost any shape of bread.
Other Names for Tiger Bread
This unique bread first became popular in the Netherlands. People there have been enjoying it since the early 1970s. In the Netherlands, it's known as tijgerbrood (tiger bread) or tijgerbol (tiger roll).
In the United States, some places call it by different names. The supermarket chain Wegmans sells it as "Marco Polo" bread. If you're in the San Francisco Bay Area, you might hear it called "Dutch Crunch."
Why "Giraffe Bread"?
In January 2012, a big supermarket in the United Kingdom called Sainsbury's changed the name of their tiger bread. They started calling it "giraffe bread." This happened after a three-year-old girl's parents wrote to the company. The little girl thought the bread looked more like a giraffe than a tiger! Sainsbury's liked the idea and made the change.
