Momtazuddin Ahmed (born January 18, 1935 – died June 2, 2019) was a famous person from Bangladesh. He was a talented writer of plays, an actor, and a teacher. He also worked a lot in culture, performing arts, and other important social and political activities. He was especially known for writing plays that used satire, which means using humor or exaggeration to show how things could be better.

Momtazuddin Ahmed's Life and Work

A Dedicated Teacher

Momtazuddin Ahmed spent more than 32 years teaching. He taught Bengali, Sanskrit, and European drama at different colleges. He was also a professor at Jagannath University and taught part-time at the University of Dhaka.

A Voice for Change

Besides teaching, Ahmed was very active in writing and acting. He was an important part of the Bengali language movement. This movement was a big effort to make Bengali an official language in what was then East Pakistan.

His plays, Raja Onushwarer Pala and Ki Chaho Shankhachil, were so good that Rabindra Bharati University decided to include them in their study programs. From 1976 to 1978, Ahmed helped create the national school curriculum and textbooks for Bangladesh.

Cultural Leader

From 1977 to 1980, Ahmed worked as a director at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. This is a national academy for arts in Bangladesh. Later, he even worked for Bangladesh at the United Nations. He was a cultural minister there, helping to share Bangladeshi culture with the world.

Momtazuddin Ahmed passed away on June 2, 2019, in Dhaka when he was 84 years old. He was buried in his family's hometown in Bholahat Upazila.

Ahmed wrote about 25 plays for the stage, radio, and television. He also directed many of them. Most of his plays and directions were for his own theatre group, Theatre (Natok Shoroni).

  • Ekushey Padak (1997) – This is the second-highest civilian award in Bangladesh.
  • In 2008, the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy honored him as one of the best playwrights in Bangladesh.
