The Monarto Woodlands Conservation Park is a special place in South Australia where nature is protected. It's located west of Murray Bridge, in areas called Monarto South and White Hill. This park helps keep important plants and animals safe.

About Monarto Woodlands Park

This conservation park was officially created on 22 September 2016. It was set up under a law called the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972. This law helps protect natural places across South Australia. The park covers an area of about 4.26 square kilometres, which is like 426 football fields!

When the park was created, it included some rules about land use. For example, it allowed for certain existing rights related to mining. This means that while the land is protected, some activities that were already happening could continue.

Why This Park is Important

On the day the park was announced, a government minister named Ian Hunter explained why it was so special. He was the Minister for Sustainability, Environment & Conservation at the time. He said that Monarto Woodlands Conservation Park, along with a nearby park called Kinchina Conservation Park, is home to many different kinds of plants and animals. This is known as biodiversity.

Much of this rich biodiversity grew because of trees planted in the 1970s. These trees were part of a plan to build a new city called Monarto. Even though the city wasn't fully built, the trees grew and created a great home for wildlife. Protecting these areas helps the government reach its goal of saving different ecosystems (natural communities of living things).

The Monarto Woodlands Conservation Park stretches for about 15 kilometres. It runs along the South Eastern Freeway, from Murray Bridge almost to Callington. This park is a very important home for over 60 different types of birds. Five of these bird species are especially important to protect in South Australia.

How the Park is Protected

The Monarto Woodlands Conservation Park is classified as an IUCN Category VI protected area. The IUCN is a global group that helps protect nature. A Category VI park means that the area is managed to protect its natural features, but it also allows for some sustainable use of its natural resources. This ensures that people can still benefit from the land in ways that don't harm the environment in the long term.
