Monaville is a small community in Logan County, West Virginia, in the United States. It's known as a "census-designated place" (CDP), which means it's a special area defined by the government for counting people. In 2010, about 309 people lived there.

Monaville's Location and Size

Monaville is found in the middle part of Logan County. It sits in a valley next to a stream called Island Creek. This creek eventually flows into the Guyandotte River.

Where is Monaville?

Monaville is about 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Logan, which is the main town in the county. It's located between two other small communities: Wilkinson to the north and Rossmore to the south.

Roads and Waterways

West Virginia Route 44 is a main road that goes through the Island Creek valley. It leads north to Mount Gay and then to Logan. If you go south on Route 44, it takes you about 14 miles (22.5 km) to U.S. Route 52 near a place called Pie.

Land and Water Area

The United States Census Bureau says that the Monaville area covers about 0.46 square miles (1.2 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a very small part, about 0.007 square miles (0.02 square kilometers), is water.

Monaville's Past

Monaville has an interesting history, especially linked to its name and the coal mining industry.

Changes in Name

Monaville used to have its own ZIP code, 25636, but its post office is now closed. Long ago, in the late 1890s, this area was called "Vanceville." It's thought that the Vance family, who owned a lot of land before coal mining became big, gave the area its first name.

How Monaville Got its Name

The name "Monaville" is believed to have been chosen to honor Mona Wilkinson. She was the daughter of an important person in the coal mining business. A photo from 1918 shows a "Mona Mine" sign on a coal tipple (a structure used to load coal), which was part of the Logan Mining Company's operations here.

Coal Mining and Community Life

The Island Creek Coal Company, which was based in Holden, ran two mines in this area, known as the #11 and #12 mines. Monaville is also home to the Foster Armory, which is where a unit of the West Virginia National Guard is located. The state archives are even working to rebuild the original Monaville schoolhouse, which was made of split logs, in the basement of the state capitol building.
