History of Monee
How Monee Got Its Name
The village of Monee is named after a woman called Marie LeFevre Bailly. She was the wife of a fur trader named Joseph Bailly. "Monee" is how people from the area, including Native Americans, pronounced "Marie."
The Cyclone of 1917
In 1917, a very strong storm, like a tornado, hit the area. Monee was on the edge of this storm, which caused damage to trees and buildings. After the storm, Monee's lumberyard helped by providing wood and materials. These materials were used to rebuild 67 damaged buildings in nearby areas like Green Garden and Monee Township.
