A Look Back at Monroe's History
The first people settled in the area where Monroe is now back in the 1850s. However, the village itself wasn't officially planned out and marked on a map until 1889. This happened when the railroad added a special track, called a siding, to that spot. A siding is like a short extra track where trains can wait or switch lines.
Monroe was named after James Monroe, who was a president of the United States.
A historical building nearby, the Monroe Congregational Church and New Hope Cemetery, is very important. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized for its special historical value.
