Silver Creek is a small village located in Merrick County, Nebraska, in the United States. In 2020, about 320 people lived there. It is part of the larger Grand Island metropolitan area.

A Look Back: Silver Creek's History

Silver Creek was officially started in 1866. This happened when the Union Pacific Railroad built its tracks to that spot. The village got its name from a nearby stream, also called Silver Creek. People said the water in this creek was very clear and sparkling, like silver!

Where is Silver Creek?

Silver Creek is in the far northeastern part of Merrick County. It is less than half a mile north of the Platte River. U.S. Route 30 goes right through the middle of the village. This road leads southwest about 22 miles to Central City, which is the main town of the county. It also goes northeast about 19 miles to Columbus.

Nebraska Highway 39 passes just west of Silver Creek. This highway goes north about 10 miles to Genoa. It also goes south across the Platte River about 9 miles to its end at Nebraska Highway 92. From there, Osceola is another 5 miles to the east.

The U.S. Census Bureau says Silver Creek covers a total area of about 0.28 square miles. All of this area is land. The Silver Creek stream, which the village is named after, flows past the south end of the village. It then joins the Platte River near the Highway 39 bridge.

Silver Creek's Population in 2010

According to the census from 2010, there were 362 people living in Silver Creek. These people made up 168 households, and 97 of these were families. The village had about 1293 people per square mile. There were 194 homes, with about 693 homes per square mile.

Most of the people in the village, 98.6%, were White. A small number, 0.3%, were Native American. About 1.1% were from other races. People who identified as Hispanic or Latino made up 3.6% of the population.

Out of the 168 households, about 23.8% had children under 18 living with them. Nearly 45% were married couples living together. About 9% were households led by a woman without a husband. About 4% were led by a man without a wife. Over 42% of households were not families.

About 36% of all households had just one person living there. And about 20% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. On average, there were 2.15 people in each household and 2.82 people in each family.

The average age of people in the village was 47.5 years old. About 21.5% of residents were under 18. About 6.5% were between 18 and 24. Around 19% were from 25 to 44. About 27.6% were from 45 to 64. And 25.4% were 65 years old or older. The village had slightly more males (50.3%) than females (49.7%).
