History of Monroe
Monroe was officially planned and laid out in 1847. It was named after James Monroe, who was the fifth President of the United States.
Monroe used to be the main town (called the "county seat") for Adams County. However, because of flooding issues, the county seat was moved to a different town called Decatur.
The Monroe area is special because it has many people whose families originally came from Switzerland. Many of these families follow a Christian faith called Anabaptism, including groups like the Swiss Mennonites and Swiss Amish. This is because Swiss Anabaptists settled in this part of Indiana in the 1800s. Some local Amish still speak a special Swiss German language, which is different from the Pennsylvania German spoken by most other Amish communities.
