Monster Rancher Battle Card GB is a fun handheld game released in 1999. You can play it on the Nintendo Game Boy Color system. In Japan, it's known as Monster Farm Battle Card GB.
This game is the first in the Monster Rancher Battle Card series. It's a card game that uses the popular characters from the Monster Rancher series. Later, another game called Monster Rancher Battle Card Episode II came out for the PlayStation system. That game had even more monsters!
How to Play the Game
Unlike other Monster Rancher games, you can't use CDs to get new monsters in Monster Rancher Battle Card GB. Instead, you start by taking a quick "personality test." This test helps decide which cards you begin the game with.
You can get more cards by beating other players in battles. You also win new monster cards when you defeat big bosses in dungeons. There's also a special code system. You can use codes to get a few specific cards for certain monsters.
Your Card Deck
Each player's deck has three monster cards. You also get fifty other cards for attacking, defending, or supporting your monsters.
- Your monster cards start on the game field.
- They have HP (Hit Points), which shows how much damage they can take.
- Monsters are either ground or air types.
Attack cards are usually for a specific type of monster. Defense cards can be for one monster type or work for any monster. Support cards help your monsters in different ways. To use these cards, you often need to spend a resource called "guts." You get "guts" by discarding cards from your hand.
Battling with Cards
When you battle, both players have three monsters on the field. You flip a coin to see who goes first. Then, each player draws five cards.
A player's turn follows these steps:
- Draw Phase: You draw cards until you have five cards in your hand.
- General Phase: This is when you can attack with your monsters or use support cards. The other player can use defense cards to block your attacks.
- Discard Phase: You can choose to discard any cards from your hand. These discarded cards turn into "guts," which you use to pay for attacks.
A monster is defeated when its HP drops to zero. You lose the game if you have no monsters left. You also lose if you can't draw a card when you need to.
Game Adventure
In the game, your character travels to different dungeons. You're looking for special "sacred stones" that help create new monster cards. You also fight in ranked battles to increase your level. A higher level unlocks new dungeons for you to explore.
Each dungeon has many floors that are different every time you visit. You'll find hidden guardians who will challenge you to a battle. There are also other characters you can challenge to a card fight. At the end of each dungeon, there's a powerful boss to defeat.
Once you reach the highest rank and finish all the dungeons, a new secret dungeon appears. After beating its boss, you can start a "new game+." This means you begin the game again, but your normal deck is locked until you reach the final dungeon. The game doesn't have a big story, but it's all about unlocking new content and battling!
