Mont Rougemont is a cool mountain in southern Quebec, Canada. Its name in the Abenaki language is Wigwômedenek. It's part of a group of mountains called the Monteregian Hills.
This mountain is made mostly of special rocks formed deep underground, like igneous rock and hornfels. The very top of Mont Rougemont is about 366 meters (1,201 feet) above sea level.
Most of the mountain is covered by a beautiful forest filled with sugar maple trees. On the lower parts of the mountain, you'll find many Apple orchards and vineyards. The fruit from these farms is often used to make tasty cider.
How Mont Rougemont Formed
Mont Rougemont is made of rocks like gabbro and pyroxenite. These are types of igneous rock, which means they formed from molten rock (magma) that cooled down.
Scientists think Mont Rougemont was once part of a huge ancient volcano that was active about 125 million years ago. Over millions of years, the softer rocks around it wore away, leaving behind the harder core of the mountain we see today.
The mountain was created because the North American Plate (a giant piece of Earth's crust) slowly moved west. As it moved, it passed over a very hot spot deep inside the Earth called the New England hotspot. This hotspot caused magma to rise and form mountains like Mont Rougemont and the other Monteregian Hills. It's all part of a long chain of volcanic activity called the Great Meteor hotspot track.
Life on the Mountain
Mont Rougemont is home to a rich variety of plants and animals. The forests are mainly made up of sugar maple trees, which are famous for their beautiful fall colors and for producing maple syrup.
The lower slopes of the mountain are perfect for growing fruit. Many farmers have planted large Apple orchards and vineyards here. These farms are a big part of the local economy and produce a lot of fruit that is turned into delicious cider.
