Montoso is a small community, also known as a barrio, located in the beautiful municipality of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 1,049 people lived there.
A Glimpse into Montoso's Past
Montoso has an interesting history, just like many places in Puerto Rico. After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States.
In 1899, the United States government did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count, called a census, found that 988 people lived in Montoso.
