History of Montpelier

Montpelier was first planned out in 1845. The village got its name from Montpelier, Vermont, another place in the United States. A post office opened in Montpelier in 1846, helping people send and receive mail. The village officially became a village in 1875.

Montpelier has several parks for everyone to enjoy. These parks offer fun things like pavilions, playgrounds, and walking trails. In 1956, the Montpelier Athletic Boosters bought land to create the first Montpelier Municipal Park.

In 2017, the village made a plan to add more trails. This plan aims to create a network of trails for walking and bicycling.

Explore the Iron Horse River Trail

The Iron Horse River Trail is a 1.5-mile path perfect for walking or mountain biking. It runs along the St. Joseph River. This trail connects the Montpelier Senior Center to the Williams County Fairgrounds. It also links to the Historical Society and the Veterans Memorial Garden.

Discover the Wabash Cannonball Trail

The Wabash Cannonball Trail, also known as Bike Route 90, is one of Ohio's longest rail-trails. It stretches for 63 miles across four counties. The trail ends near Montpelier, making it easy for residents to access.

Students in Montpelier attend schools within the Montpelier Exempted Village School District. Both Montpelier Junior/Senior High School and Montpelier Elementary School are on the same campus. This campus is located on the south side of the village.

Montpelier is known for its excellent water! The village has won awards for its municipal water supply several times. They won the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting competition in 2003, 2006, 2007, 2017, and 2022. This means Montpelier's water was judged as some of the best, even beating water from other cities around the world.

Williams County Fairgrounds

The Williams County Fairgrounds are located on the east side of Montpelier. This is a popular spot for events and gatherings. The Williams County Historical Museum is also found at the fairgrounds. It's a great place to learn about the area's past.
