Montreat's Story: A Look at Its History
The town of Montreat became an official North Carolina township in 1967. A lot of the land in the area is still owned by the Mountain Retreat Association. This group was started in 1897 by John Collins, a minister from Connecticut. Money to create the retreat came from John S. Huyler, a candy maker and generous person.
The name "Montreat" is a mix of the words "Mountain" and "Retreat." In 1907, the Presbyterian Church in the US took control of the Mountain Retreat Association (MRA). For many years, Montreat has been a place for religious meetings, mostly for Presbyterians. These meetings are organized by the MRA. The Woman's Auxiliary of the Presbyterian Church, U.S. was also started in Montreat in 1912.
Today, important groups in Montreat include the Mountain Retreat Association, Montreat Presbyterian Church: PC(USA), Montreat College (which started in 1916), and Christ Community Church, EPC.
In 2024, the town faced a lot of damage from Hurricane Helene.
