Montrezl Dashay Harrell (born January 26, 1994) is an American professional basketball player. He currently plays for the Adelaide 36ers in Australia's NBL. Montrezl is known for playing as a power forward or center.
He played college basketball for the Louisville Cardinals. There, he won the Karl Malone Award in 2015. This award goes to the best power forward in the country. In 2015, the Houston Rockets picked him in the NBA draft. Later, he joined the Los Angeles Clippers in 2017. He was named the NBA Sixth Man of the Year in 2020. After that, he played for several other NBA teams.

High School Basketball Journey
Montrezl Harrell is 6 feet 7 inches tall. He grew up in Tarboro, North Carolina. He first played basketball at North Edgecombe High School. Then, he spent a year at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia.
At Hargrave Military Academy, his team had a great record of 38 wins and only 1 loss. Montrezl was a star player. He scored about 25.2 points and grabbed 13.6 rebounds per game on average. He first planned to play college basketball at Virginia Tech. But he later chose to play for the Louisville Cardinals.
College Basketball Career
Montrezl Harrell started his college career at Louisville. As a freshman, he was a backup player. He averaged 5.7 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. He played his best at the end of the season. He scored 20 points in a big game against Syracuse.
In his first year, Montrezl helped the Louisville Cardinals win the 2013 NCAA championship. This was a huge achievement for the team.
After his freshman year, Montrezl became a top player. Many people thought he would be a high pick in the 2014 NBA draft. But he decided to stay for his junior year. In the 2014–15 season, he averaged 15.7 points and 9.2 rebounds. He also won the first-ever Karl Malone Award. This award honors the best power forward in college basketball.
Professional Basketball Career
Starting with the Houston Rockets (2015–2017)
On June 25, 2015, the Houston Rockets chose Montrezl Harrell. He was the 32nd pick in the 2015 NBA draft. He signed a three-year deal with the Rockets in September 2015.
Montrezl played his first NBA game on October 28. He scored 8 points and had 3 rebounds. A few days later, he scored 17 points in a game. On November 13, he started his first NBA game. He scored 5 points in that game. During his first year, he also played for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. This team is part of the NBA's minor league.
In his second season with the Rockets, Montrezl played even better. On November 2, 2016, he scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. On December 30, he scored a career-high 29 points. He continued to show his skills, scoring 28 points in just 26 minutes on January 8, 2017.
Playing for the Los Angeles Clippers (2017–2020)
On June 28, 2017, Montrezl Harrell joined the Los Angeles Clippers. He was part of a trade deal with the Houston Rockets. On January 11, 2018, he scored 25 points, which was his season high.
He re-signed with the Clippers on July 24, 2018. Montrezl kept improving his game. On October 26, 2018, he scored a career-high 30 points. He matched this score on February 22, 2019. Just three days later, he set a new career high with 32 points.
In September 2020, Montrezl Harrell won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award. This award goes to the best player who comes off the bench. However, the Clippers lost in the playoffs that year. Montrezl's playing time was reduced in the playoffs.
Time with the Los Angeles Lakers (2020–2021)
On November 22, 2020, Montrezl Harrell signed with the Los Angeles Lakers. He made his debut for the Lakers on December 22, 2020. In that game, he scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds.
Moving to the Washington Wizards (2021–2022)
On August 6, 2021, Montrezl was traded to the Washington Wizards. This trade was part of a larger deal involving Russell Westbrook.
Playing for the Charlotte Hornets (2022)
On February 10, 2022, Montrezl Harrell was traded again. He joined the Charlotte Hornets. He played his first game for the Hornets on February 11. He scored 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in that game.
Joining the Philadelphia 76ers (2022–2023)
On September 13, 2022, Montrezl signed with the Philadelphia 76ers. He played his first game for the 76ers on October 18. He scored 2 points in that game.
In June 2023, Montrezl decided to become a free agent. He signed a new one-year deal with the 76ers in July. However, he had an injury in August and was later released from the team.
Playing in Australia with the Adelaide 36ers (2024–present)
On September 12, 2024, Montrezl Harrell signed with the Adelaide 36ers. This team is part of Australia's NBL. He joined as a player who could fill in for an injured teammate.
In his first game for the 36ers on September 22, he scored 13 points and had 13 rebounds. On October 18, he signed to play for the rest of the season. On October 25, he had an amazing game. He scored 36 points, grabbed 16 rebounds, and blocked 5 shots.
National Team Experience
Montrezl Harrell has also played for the United States national team. In 2012, he was part of the team that won a Gold Medal. This was at the FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship in Brazil.
Personal Life
Montrezl Harrell's parents are Samuel and Selena Harrell. He has two younger brothers named Cadarius and Quatavius. His father added the silent "l" to his first name to make it special.
Montrezl has two children. They live with their mother in Kentucky. He is also good friends with football player Todd Gurley. They both went to high school in Tarboro.
Montrezl loves collecting and designing sneakers. He works with artists to create unique shoe designs. Since 2018, the NBA has allowed players to wear different shoes. Montrezl often wears different shoes in each half of a game.
