Monument is a small community located in Centre County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's also a "census-designated place," meaning the U.S. Census Bureau counts its population separately for statistics. In 2010, about 150 people lived there.

A Look at Monument's History

For many years, Monument's economy relied heavily on a brick factory. This factory was built around 1901 by a company called Harbison-Walker Refractories. The factory made special "refractory bricks." These bricks were very important because they could handle extremely high heat. They were used to line the inside of furnaces and other industrial equipment. The brick factory was a major employer in Monument for over 50 years. However, it eventually closed down in May 1953.

Geography of Monument

Monument is located in the northeastern part of Centre County, Pennsylvania. You can find it in the northern section of Liberty Township. The community sits in the valley of Beech Creek. This creek flows southeast and eventually joins Bald Eagle Creek. Bald Eagle Creek is part of the larger Susquehanna River watershed. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a common river or body of water.

Nearby Roads and Waterways

A road called former Pennsylvania Route 364 goes right through Monument. If you travel west on this road, you'll go about 3 miles (5 km) upstream along Beech Creek to a place called Orviston. If you head southeast, going downstream, you'll reach the town of Beech Creek about 7 miles (11 km) away.

Size of the Community

According to the United States Census Bureau, Monument is quite small. It covers a total area of about 0.23 square kilometers (which is about 0.09 square miles). All of this area is land; there are no large bodies of water within the community's boundaries.
