Building the Monument
The idea for this monument came up in December 1923. A local council member, Antonio Montilla Rivero, suggested it after Miguel Primo de Rivera became the leader of Spain. Everyone on the council agreed with the idea. A special group was formed in 1925 to manage the project. People donated money to help pay for the monument.
The famous artist Mariano Benlliure was chosen to design the monument. Construction work began on October 2, 1928. It is said that Benlliure used a real horse from a military group as a model for the statue's horse.
What the Monument Shows
The front of the monument's base has the coat of arms of Spain. It also has a message that says: "to the famous jerezano, restorer of order, Miguel Primo de Rivera y Orbaneja, Peacemaker of Morocco and Marquis of Estella. The grateful homeland."
Right in front of the base, there is a statue of a winged Victory. She holds a laurel branch in her right hand and a general's helmet in her left arm.
Side Sculptures
Both sides of the monument's base have detailed sculptures.
- The right side shows a meeting of generals. The words "studying the ultimate breakthrough plan" are written there. This scene includes Primo de Rivera with other important military leaders like Sanjurjo and Leopoldo Saro.
- The left side shows five moors working the land with two oxen. This part is called "the point of victory."
Back of the Monument
The back of the monument features a figure representing Peace or Plentifulness. This figure holds stalks of grain, and there are two cornucopias (horn-shaped baskets full of good things) at her feet.
There is also a bronze picture of Miguel's brother, Fernando Primo de Rivera y Orbaneja. He died in Monte Arruit in 1921. His picture is inside a round frame decorated with laurel wreaths. Below it, the words "honoring their heroes" are written.
Unveiling Ceremony
The monument was officially revealed on September 29, 1929. Miguel Primo de Rivera himself attended the ceremony.
