History of Moorcroft

Moorcroft became an official town on October 2, 1906. The name "Moorcroft" has a few possible stories behind it! Some say it was named in 1876 after an early settler from England named Alexander Moorcroft. He built a cabin in the nearby Black Hills. Another idea is that the town's first postman, Stocks Millar, chose the name because it was the same as his hometown in Scotland.

Moorcroft covers an area of about 1.26 square miles (3.27 square kilometers). It's all land, with no large bodies of water inside the town limits.
