Mooryati Soedibyo (born 5 January 1928 – died 24 April 2024) was an amazing Indonesian woman. She was a princess, a successful businesswoman, and an important politician. She belonged to the royal family of Surakarta Sunanate.
Mooryati Soedibyo was the leader of a famous beauty company called Mustika Ratu. She also served as the Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly from 2004 to 2009. This is a big role in Indonesia's government. She was also in charge of Puteri Indonesia, a national beauty pageant. This pageant sends contestants to big international competitions like Miss Universe.
In 2007, a magazine called Globe Asia listed her as one of the 99 most influential women in Indonesia. The Indonesian World Records Museum recognized her for two special achievements. She was the oldest person to earn a doctorate degree in Indonesia. She was also known as "Empu Jamu," which means a master of traditional Indonesian herbal medicine.

Early Life and Royal Education
Mooryati Soedibyo was born in Surakarta, a city in Central Java, Indonesia. She grew up inside the palace of the Surakarta Sunanate royal family. As a granddaughter of Pakubuwana X, a former king, she received a special traditional education.
In the palace, she learned many important skills. This included good manners, classical dance, and traditional Javanese music called karawitan. She also learned how to make batik cloth and how to use nutritious plants. A very important part of her education was learning about herbal medicine and traditional Javanese cosmetics. She learned these secrets from her grandmother. The royal family kept this knowledge very safe.
Mooryati also studied Javanese literary language and traditional songs. She even learned about the ancient Kawi script. This special education helped her later in life.
Education and Family
Mooryati Soedibyo continued her studies even after her traditional palace education. She earned a bachelor's degree in English literature from the Indonesia Open University. Later, she got a master's degree in English literature from Sebelas Maret University. She then earned a PhD in strategic management from the University of Indonesia.
In 1956, she married Soedibyo Purbo Hadiningrat. Her life was a mix of traditional knowledge and modern education.
Building a Business Empire
Mooryati Soedibyo used her knowledge of traditional herbs and cosmetics to create a successful business. In 1975, she started her own cosmetics company called Mustika Ratu. This company became very popular in Indonesia.
Mustika Ratu sells many beauty products made from natural ingredients. The company also has its own spa resorts. These spas offer traditional Indonesian treatments. In 2002, a company called Ernst & Young Indonesia named her "Entrepreneur of the Year." This award recognized her great success in business.
Public Service and Influence
Besides her business, Mooryati Soedibyo was also active in politics. She served as a member of the Regional Representative Council. This council helps represent different regions of Indonesia. She was also a member and vice chairperson of the People's Consultative Assembly. This is a very important government body in Indonesia.
In 1990, Mooryati Soedibyo took over the license for the Puteri Indonesia beauty pageant. She became the national director for this event. Under her leadership, Puteri Indonesia grew. It became the official pageant that sends Indonesian contestants to major international beauty contests.
