Where the River Flows

The Moosup River starts from a place called Clark Pond in Foster, Rhode Island. From there, it travels south through Foster and another town called Coventry. Then, it makes a turn to the west and flows into Connecticut. In Connecticut, it goes through Sterling and Plainfield. Finally, the Moosup River joins a bigger river called the Quinebaug River.

Helping Fish by Removing Dams

Did you know that dams can sometimes make it hard for fish to swim freely? The American Rivers organization works to help rivers by removing old dams. They chose the Moosup River as a place to do this. Removing dams helps fish, especially those that need to swim upstream to lay their eggs (this is called spawning).

In June 2014, a dam called Moosup Dam #1 in Connecticut was taken out. Then, in September 2015, another dam, the Griswold Rubber dam, was also removed. These actions help fish like alewife and blueback herring move more easily along the river.

Tributaries of the Moosup River

The Moosup River gets water from many smaller streams and brooks. These smaller waterways are called tributaries. They help keep the river flowing and healthy. Some of the brooks that feed into the Moosup River are:

  • West Meadow Brook
  • Bucks Horn Brook
  • Roaring Brook
  • Vaughn Brook
  • Quanduck Brook
  • Angell Brook
