Mora de Rubielos is a town in Spain. It is found in the province of Teruel, which is part of the Aragon region. This area is known for its mountainous landscape, located within the Iberian System.

In 2009, about 1,756 people lived here. Mora de Rubielos is famous for its beautiful castle, which was built in the 14th century. It is also the main town of the Gúdar-Javalambre area.

Exploring Mora de Rubielos

Mora de Rubielos is located in the Alto Mijares region. It sits by the Fuen Lozana river, at the base of the Sierra de Gúdar mountains. The town has different types of settlements. Some people live in small farmhouses, while others live in tiny villages like Santa Lucía and Troya. The main town itself is where most people live.

Climate and Weather

The town is quite high up, at 1,035 meters (about 3,395 feet) above sea level. It has a "mid-mountain climate." This means it's usually dry, with cold winters and mild summers. The average temperature each year is about 11.1 degrees Celsius (52 degrees Fahrenheit). The town gets about 550 millimeters (21.6 inches) of rain per year.

A Look Back at Mora's History

Mora de Rubielos has a long and interesting history. It played an important role during the Middle Ages.

Medieval Times and Ownership

During the Middle Ages, Christian armies fought to take back land from Muslim rule. Mora was an important Christian outpost. This was before the town of Rubielos was captured in 1204.

Over time, Mora de Rubielos changed hands many times. King Pedro II gave the town and castle to Pedro Ladrón in 1198. Later, King James I included it in the Jérica area. He then gave it to his son, Don Jaime.

Wars and Royal Titles

Mora was taken by Spanish troops during the War of the Two Peters. But it returned to Aragon in 1364. King Pedro IV promised that the town would always belong to the crown. However, this promise was not kept. The town and castle were sold to Don Hugo, the Viscount of Cardona. He then sold them to Don Blasco Fernández de Heredia in 1367. Eventually, the Fernández de Heredia family became the owners. Gil Ruiz de Lihori took over in 1388 and changed his name to Juan Fernández de Heredia. Mora de Rubielos also had a customs office. This office collected taxes on goods traded with Valencia.

In the late 1400s, Mora de Rubielos became a "Marquesado," which is a special noble title. After the War of Succession, the town supported Philip V. Because of this, it received the title "Faithful" and a special symbol, the fleur-de-lis, on its shield.

Life in the 19th Century

Pascual Madoz wrote about Mora de Rubielos in his 1845 dictionary. He described the town as having two parts: "New Villa" and "Old Villa." These parts were separated by a small stream. He noted that the town had about 500 houses. The town hall was quite impressive.

Economically, Mora de Rubielos produced wheat, corn, beans, potatoes, onions, and other vegetables. Sheep farming was also important. In the past, the town made brown cloth and sackcloth for religious groups. But these industries stopped, which made the town poorer.

Mora in the Spanish Civil War

Mora de Rubielos played a big role during the Spanish Civil War (1937-1938). This was a very difficult time for Spain.

During the Battle of Teruel, Mora de Rubielos became the capital of the area held by the Republican side. The town faced many challenges during the war. By May 1938, the Republican forces defended the area with a long line of defenses. This was known as the "Grande Arche de Mora Rubielos."

As the war continued, the army led by General Franco advanced. Mora de Rubielos became part of a difficult area called the "Bolsa de Mora de Rubielos." Finally, on July 16, Franco's troops broke through the front near the town. News reports from that time stated that the troops had made a big advance and taken Mora de Rubielos. For a few days, General Franco's headquarters were in the town.
