Moraine is well-known for its history of making things. A long time ago, from 1917 to 1923, a company called Dayton Wright Airplane built airplanes here. They made over 4,000 planes, including some used in World War I.
In 1919, General Motors (GM) bought Dayton-Wright. GM stopped making planes in 1923. But in 1926, GM made the factory bigger and started using it to build refrigerators. The company Frigidaire made appliances there until 1979.
However, GM kept the factory and changed it to make vehicles. In 1981, the plant reopened and started making trucks like the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. In the 1990s, a new paint shop was added. An engine plant called DMAX was also built there. This plant kept making SUVs until 2008 when it closed.
The DMAX engine plant is still open today. It even got a big upgrade in 2014. This factory has been making things for a very long time, with 86 years of manufacturing history by 2008.
